Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment

Symptoms of neuropathy can vary, but they often manifest in our extremities. In these cases, known as peripheral neuropathy, symptoms include muscle weakness, problems with coordination and/or motor skills, various painful sensations (from tingling to sharp pricking or burning), and if left untreated, can eventually result in partial or total paralysis in one or several limbs. Our chiropractic physicians can help you treat your peripheral neuropathy.

More About Peripheral Neuropathy

Ever been in a cell phone conversation where the reception keeps cutting in and out? Frustrating, right? You might get the general idea of what’s going on, but it takes a lot of work when there are constant gaps in the transmission. Or, how about the game we all played as kids: telephone? The game starts with all the kids sitting in a circle. The first child whispers a word or phrase into the ear of the next one, and so on and so forth. The last one to receive the message blurts out what they were just told.

The message is never exactly right, is it? Often times, the end message is way off from the original. These are examples of what happens when signal fidelity is compromised. In each case, the signal or message is distorted in some way because of a problem in the transmission process. In a telephone, the compromise might take place because the internal electronic components have been damaged by corrosion or external shock (like what happens when you drop your phone onto the pavement).

Well, the same thing can happen in your body. Your spine is the hub for the body’s central nervous system, which carries signals from the brain to every part of the body, and back again. These signals run along neural pathways that we refer to as nerves (which is why when someone is annoying, they’re often said to be “getting on our nerves” – the expression refers to pain signals traveling to the brain). Sometimes because of problems with the spine, the nerves themselves become damaged, and their electronic signals become distorted.

Our Phases of Care

Phase 1: Relief Care

Many people go to a chiropractor because they are in pain. In this first phase of care, the main goal is to reduce your symptoms, usually requiring regular visits.

Phase 2: Corrective Care

In order to prevent a rapid recurrence of symptoms, it is necessary to continue receiving care even though your symptoms have been alleviated.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed, routine chiropractic care can help ensure your physical problems do not return and keep your body in optimal condition.
